My class, “global feminisms,” was declared, among many other apparently “radical” courses, “corrupt” on a right-wing watchdog website, and the department head of women’s studies (Lorraine Dowler), also another geographer, now has numerous skills for dealing with public debate over women’s studies curricula and pedagogy. There is no ivory tower for this department. We were never invited in the first place and, well, the public just won’t let us go climb up. So we’re here in the trenches of public education, public funding and public accountability.

My own bad judgment on titles was confirmed by another event in 1969. With a close colleague, Charles Remington at Yale University, and a New Haven attorney, Richard Bowers, I founded Zero Population Growth (ZPG). The name for the organization was Bowers’ idea, and I didn’t like it a bit. I told him it would confuse people. But since he was the one who thought of starting an organization, we let him have his way, and he was correct. ZPG turned out to be an excellent name. Within a few years, it was ranked as the most effective lobbying group in Washington DC, and the term “zero population growth” actually infiltrated the technical demographic literature, meaning a “stationary” (that is, non-growing) population.

For some alumni, however, this work smacked of anti-Americanism. Several fired off angry emails expressing a wish that the university sever its ties with me. I was taken aback, and I considered it ironic because two of my co-authors were active-duty officers in the US military attending graduate school on scholarships. Soon criticisms of my work made their way into the stonethrowing world of talk radio and Internet blogs, and I was pulled into the public arena whether I wanted to be or not.
