In the third part, I explain how this interpretation can illuminate Berkeley’s Master Argument. 37 BERKELEY: A GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED SECTION ONE: THE MASTER ARGUMENT Berkeley famously offers what has come to be known as his “Master Argument” in both the Principles and the First Dialogue. In both versions of the argument, Berkeley audaciously claims this argument alone is sufficient to establish basic idealism (the view that everyday items of the world cannot exist without a perceiving mind).

More deeply, however, we can begin to appreciate why, for Berkeley to profess this type of skepticism is to depart in a radical way from the common folk. For they move through life utterly undisturbed by this philosophical ignorance.
