While there is no denying that history books and memories provide us with information about what occurred in the past, and calendars and diaries mention future times, facts such as these do not in themselves entail that the past and future are just as real as the present, nor that most people believe as much. Indeed, most people believe future events have no existence at all, and many believe that past events cease to exist when they cease to be present. These beliefs may turn out to be incoherent, but they are beliefs that many hold.

According to the modal realist, all possible worlds are equally real, all exist in exactly the same way; although the inhabitants of each world regard their own world as actual and the others as merely possible, each claim to actuality is equally valid. The modal actualist, by contrast, maintains that only one world is actual, only one world exists, the other possible worlds are merely possible. These different views of possible worlds, when combined with Bigelow’s modal model of passage, yield very different conceptions of time.

This objection has considerable force. The appeal of the meta-time model lies in its purported ability to explain how presentness can be gained and lost; but in fact the model yields the result that every moment permanently possesses presentness, albeit at different moments of meta-time. Since the theory fails to explain what it sets out to explain, there is no reason to accept it. To meet this objection the defender of meta-time might say: Ah, but you are making the mistake of forgetting that meta-time is itself a temporal dimension, and as such it has its own unique present: the meta-now.
